ACE High School Registration

Welcome, High School Students (and Parents)!

By pursuing ACE CNC machining training, you’ll join a new generation of innovators using technology to shape the future of advanced manufacturing and engineering.

This no-cost, hands-on training that introduces students to the fundamentals of computer numerical control (CNC) machining, an in-demand skill in advanced manufacturing and engineering. The program is designed to help students understand how parts are designed, programmed, and produced using CNC equipment found in today’s high-tech industries.

Students who enroll in the ACE CNC course will:

  • Learn CNC machine setup, safety, and operation
  • Practice real-world machining using industry-standard mills and lathes
  • Gain experience with G-code programming and part production
  • Machine components for oscillating piston air engine and complete its assembly
  • Compete in a competition to see who can assemble their air engine the fastest

The program is supported by Penn State Behrend, the Department of Defense, and managed by IACMI – The Composites Institute. It’s open to students ages 16 and up and includes an online component (link found below), followed by a one-week, in-person session at Penn State Behrend. ACE course will be held in the Burke building, July 7 – 11, starting at 8:30 am until 4:30 pm. Lunch and snacks will be provided. All participants MUST wear short sleeve shirts, long pants or jeans along with closed-toe shoes since you are in labs (No jewelry, shorts, or open-toe shoes).

Final details such as a map, directions, and parking will be emailed the week prior to the class.

For questions pertaining to the boot camp, please contact Zoe Armstrong, ACE Coordinator, at behrendace@psu.edu

Use the “ACE High School Registration” button to access CampDoc, create your registration profile, and log back in and register for the boot camp. If you have a problem with scheduling, please contact DocNetwork Support via the CampDoc site.

Here is What You Need to Know About the Boot Camp.

Registration for the Boot Camp

This program session, along with many others across the Behrend campus and the University, utilizes the CampDoc system. CampDoc allows users to create a profile, create individual accounts for multiple children under one profile, and register for programs and events across the entire Penn State system. All in-person registrations for ACE must be processed through the CampDoc system. Our ACE team at Behrend is unable to process any registrations via paper, email, or phone calls. For questions regarding the CampDoc system, including setting up your profile, registering for classes via the system, or other issues while using CampDoc, please contact DocNetwork Support via the CampDoc site.

Registration for the Online Content

The ACE CNC training consists of two parts: (1) online and (2) in-person.

Please register for the online training before attending the in-person boot camp. You are not required to complete the online portion before July 7, as time will be provided during the boot camp to finish it.

Note that the online training is managed by IACMI – The Composites Institute, not by PSU Behrend ACE. After registering, please allow up to 24 hours (or 48 hours if registering on a weekend) to gain access to the online content, as this is a manual process.

If you do not receive access within that timeframe, please contact tblevins@IACMI.org.

Lunch and Snacks

The ACE program will provide lunch and snacks to participants every day. Water bottles are always permited and encouraged.

Food Allergies: Please be sure to note any food allergies your child may have on the Medical Release form required at time of registration and please notify ACE staff of food allergies upon arrival to class.

Medication Policy

This information will be provided during online registration.

If at all possible, medication should be administered at home. Medications will be allowed at the ACE Program only when failure to take such medicine would jeopardize the health of a child and otherwise prevent attendance.

The parent(s) or legal guardian(s) of ACE Program participants are required to disclose their intention to bring medications to the Program, especially those used to treat potentially life-threatening conditions (e.g., inhalers, EpiPens, insulin injections). Upon arrival at the program, parent(s)/legal guardian(s) should plan to meet with a member of the ACE Program staff at registration to review medication issues for a ACE Program participant and complete additional required paperwork if not completed prior to arrival. For identification purposes, a current picture of the child must be provided upon registration.

All medications (prescription and over-the-counter) must be stored in the original product packaging and clearly labeled with the participant’s name. Prescription medication(s) must also include a label with the medication’s name and dosage instructions, as well as the prescribing physician’s name and telephone number.

All medications will be kept in a securely locked cabinet used exclusively for storage of medications. Medications that require refrigeration will be stored and locked in a refrigerator designated for medications ONLY. Access to all medications will be limited to approved personnel. The need for emergency medication may require that a ACE Program participant carry the medication on their person or that it be easily accessible (i.e., inhalers, EpiPens, insulin injections). Penn State ACE Program staff will NOT purchase medications of any type (prescription or over-the-counter) for ACE Program participants of any age.

If a Program has professional medical staff on-site, then the medical staff may administer over-the-counter medications (e.g., ibuprofen or Tylenol) supplied by the parent(s)/guardian(s) per package instructions. Medical staff may monitor the self-administration of medications, if necessary, upon written consent of the parent(s), legal guardian(s), or physician orders.

If there are no medical staff on-site, Penn State ACE Program staff will not dispense medications, but may monitor the self-administration of certain medications if necessary, ONLY upon written consent of the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) and/or physician’s orders. All medication must be given within the College for Kids program office and will only be administered during pickup, drop-off, and lunch times if absolutely necessary. Again, if possible, all medication should be administered by a parent or guardian before or after the program or at home.

It is NOT permissible for a participant to share any medications with any other participants.

It is the responsibility of the parent(s)/legal guardian(s) to be sure that the participant’s medications brought to the ACE Program are not left behind at the end of the Program. Failure to do so will result in the medications being destroyed within three working days after the participant’s last day at the Program. Absolutely no medications will be returned via mail, regardless of circumstance.
